Exhibitions & shows….

It is perhaps worth emphasising that owing to the nature of my work, i.e. exploring the links between clay, people and place, the associated projects, stalls, workshops and exhibitions are often linked to businesses in the areas close to my home city, or in the places that I am conducting research. Links with The Plough pub on Deansway, Worcester, Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Triangle Bakehouse in Ripponden and most recently Method Coffee Roasters and Cafe, Cup Ceramics Community (Hereford) and the Museum of Royal Worcester – have provided openings for either my work (for use or sale), or for workshops and training events within these contexts. These projects were & are very different, with changing outcomes, but saw & see interaction with the public in terms of challenges and, perhaps appreciation on a range of levels – maybe different to encountering ceramics within galleries or specific arts / makers spaces, where there is a focus on drawing in people who may already be ceramic enthusiasts. This reflects a commitment of mine to try and find ways of working beyond the white cube space, or even smaller gallery spaces and shops selling artisan crafts, often found in towns with a regular flow of visitors. I suppose it is an interest in placing my functional ceramics in places where you might perhaps not immediately expect to find them that motivates me to find unusual places to sell…. ?

Lost and Found solo show at Dean Clough Gallery, Halifax, West Yorkshire. Exhibition in the Link Gallery, combined with a film night / community event I organised to celebrate the life and works of Isaac Button. October 2016 – January 2017. This exhibition included a more diverse range of work from the MA project and included a range of John Anderson’s original 1964/5 photographs of Isaac Button – taken whilst filming Isaac Button Country Potter.  The photographs were shown under licence from Yorkshire Film Archive. As part of the Dean Clough show, I worked with Vic Allen (the Dean Clough Arts Coordinator) to arrange a special film night, using the ongoing show as an occasion to project the classic film Isaac Button Country Potter, by John Anderson and Robert Fournier (1965). Over 110 people came to this event, many bringing their pots and stories of the man himself….. The film was shown under licence from Yorkshire Film Archive.

MA Show at the Sion Hill Campus, Bath Spa University. September 2016. This show took a highly edited collection from my final MA project; inspired by an exploration of Soil Hill, Calderdale, the remains of Isaac Button’s old workshop – and by the old pancheon bought in the Piece Hall, Halifax in 1987. The project involved landscape archaeology, photography, digging local clays (with permission), meeting incredible people with stories and connections to my work, ceramic testing and experimentation, work with local bakeries and drawing.

Stall at Bovey Tracey Contemporary Craft Festival, representing Bath Spa University, July 2016. Exhibiting work from my exploration of Clee Hill (Shropshire) and the testing and experimentation with the clays dug from this wild, open, much mutilated hill – the source of stone, coal and clay extraction over the centuries….

Creative Sparks collaborative project / show with Michie Lynne for opening of Commons Building, Newton Park Campus, Bath Spa University. June 2014.
