Iron-rich Devon Clays 2024

In the winter of 2023/24, I reconnected with old friends that I had studied with at Newcastle University, several of whom now live in Devon. One is a farmer, who lives and farms north of Dartmoor, between Exeter and Oakhampton, and after a request a few years back to experiment with clays from this region (by a friend who runs a local cafe here in Worcester – which turned out to be promising and successful), I was delighted to find from the BGS Geological Viewer, that the same clays run beneath the farm. This led to a year of exploration, collection and experimentation; digging clays from fields and cider apple orchards in this quiet part of mid-Devon, from my cafe friend’s family dairy farm out near Bridgerule, whilst also visiting the expansive ball clay quarries at Kingsteignton (thanks to the quarry manager and Sibelco), and gathering possible glaze materials such as granite dust from Blackenstone Quarry near Moretonhampstead. The project also led me to explore forms linked to the long history of cider making in this area, and to experimentation with glazes using the local glaze materials (clay, ash and granite dust) and my workshop made tin, zirconium-silicate and tenmoku glazes.

The wee bowl that started it all: Ashton Mudstone Member / Crackington Formation clay from near Inwardleigh, Mid Devon, with ash / clay glaze and dolerite glaze (interior). Thanks to Kit.
